Professor Prapa Kanagaratnam is a Consultant Cardiologist based at the London Heart Practice, specialising in treating patients with palpitations, atrial fibrillation, heart failure and complex devices. He is also Professor of Cardiology at Imperial College where he leads the Cardiac Electrophysiology team.


Professor Kanagaratnam received his medical qualification from Cambridge University where he was awarded a prestigious scholarship from St John’s College. After his studies at Imperial college on atrial fibrillation, he was awarded a PhD and as well as the British Cardiac Society Young Investigator Prize. He completed his specialist training in both cardiology and electrophysiology at St Mary’s Hospital in London in 2005.


Professor Kanagaratnam has received multiple funding grants from the British Heart Foundation for his multi-centre clinical trials. At Imperial College, he invented a novel technique called Ripple Mapping as a method to improve the treatment of heart rhythm disorders. As a pioneer of innovative cardiology practices, he has introduced a number of new treatments to the NHS, including left atrial appendage occlusion and robotic ablation technology.

  • Prof Prapa Kanagaratnam is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College and regularly supervises students during Ph.D. studies.
  • Prof Prapa Kanagaratnam has helped educational programs for arrhythmia nursing and SpR training. He supervises PhD fellows at Imperial College. He has been an international proctor for left atrial appendage occlusion procedures and is on faculty at many of the major international scientific meetings.
