BACKGROUND &
EXPERIENCE
Professor Prapa Kanagaratnam is a Consultant Cardiologist based at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and specialises in treating patients with palpitations, atrial fibrillation, heart failure and complex devices. He is also Professor of Cardiology at Imperial College and is the Clinical Lead for the Cardiac Electrophysiology team.
Professor Kanagaratnam received his medical qualification from Cambridge University where he received a prestigious Rolleston scholarship from St John’s College. He went on to complete a PhD on atrial fibrillation at Imperial college and was awarded the British Cardiac Society Young Investigator Prize for this work. He completed his specialist training in both Cardiology and Electrophysiology at St Mary’s Hospital in London in 2005.
Professor Kanagaratnam has received multiple funding grants from the British Heart Foundation for his research fellows and clinical trials. He invented a novel technique called Ripple Mapping to improve the treatment of heart rhythm disorders and is used by doctors throughout the world on the CARTO™ platform. As a pioneer of innovative cardiology practices, he has introduced a number of new treatments to the NHS, including left atrial appendage occlusion and robotic ablation technology. His contribution to medical practice was recognised by Imperial College with the title of
Professor of Cardiology.

TEACHING
Prof Prapa Kanagaratnam regularly supervises students during PhD studies.
Prof Prapa Kanagaratnam has helped educational programs for arrhythmia nursing and SpR training. He has been an international proctor for left atrial appendage occlusion procedures and is on faculty at many of the major international scientific meetings.
